Visitors to Los Gigantes and the surrounding towns has increased in recent weeks, the wonderful bustle of people returning for holiday’s is a welcome relief to the local businesses that rely upon tourism and have struggled throughout the pandemic. Much of the island’s vibrant life is returning, and we who live here are looking forward to the time festivals, markets and carnivals return to our towns and villages.

This post will explore Puerto de Santiago.
Puerto de Santiago is a family friendly, old fishing village on the island. As a working town it has lots of essential amenities for residents and tourists alike, including a medical centre, a pharmacy and sporting facilities, including a large sports centre. There is no shortage of essential shops and grocery stores or restaurants.
There is also a good choice of accommodation for tourists.
It is a clean, friendly and ample town. There is the small but beautiful Playa Chica beach, with a seafront area which has a small church. The beach is very scenic, however there are no lifeguards or options for renting sun loungers or parasols. It is a popular, pretty beach that offers incredible views and watching the sunset there is one of the best ways to appreciate its appeal. From the beach it is even possible to see the island of La Gomera in the distance. A sight that has to be seen to truly appreciate the incredible area in which Tenerife sits.
The plaza of Puerto de Santiago, which was redesigned by the council a couple of years ago, has fountains in the ground for children to play in the hot summer days and contains a small play park. It has plenty of seated areas where one can enjoy the atmosphere. The plaza also is host to occasional artisan markets, where you can find a variety of different and unique items for sale. The plaza is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the scenery and sunshine, and has many coffee shops close by to enjoy a drink in a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere.
The town has a free museum, which gives the history of the fishing industry, the town and the local fiesta that is to celebrate the fisherman. It is definitely worth visiting in order to learn more about this interesting town. On the top floor of the museum is an art gallery which showcases the works of local artists.
The town has good travel links and is within a ten minute (approximately) walk of Los Gigantes. For a longer stroll, one can walk to Playa de la Arena in around forty minutes, and enjoy the sunshine and scenery while doing so.
It is worth noting that there are quite a lot of hills in the area, which may not be suitable for someone with mobility issues, however there are still many areas that are accessible/wouldn’t present issues for those with disabilities.
There are always many things to enjoy on our island.
